Chemainus loses a legend

Karl Schutz, age 92, of Chemainus, British Columbia passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2022. Karl was born on May 10, 1930.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialduncan.com for the Schutz family.

Statement from Chemainus Festival of Murals Society

Dr. Karl Schutz believed that Chemainus’s history and heritage deserved to be celebrated and that Chemainus’s people deserved beautiful public art.

His vision, perseverance, and dedication led to the creation of the Chemainus Mural Project.

What started with five murals in 1982 has grown to 61 murals today. The project has inspired our community and

attracted worldwide attention, and Karl’s promotion of the Chemainus Mural Project spoke to his determination to make Chemainus a world-renowned tourist destination and “Canada’s Mural Capital.”

The Chemainus Festival of Murals Society is indebted to Karl for his decades-long dedication to, and involvement with, the society.

He was a force to be reckoned with and will be greatly missed.

Today is a sad day and the world will be less colourful with the passing at the venerable age of 92, of our good friend and mentor Dr. Karl Schutz. At least he peacefully drifted away, that is comforting.

He will be missed, but he will not be forgotten, and we cannot thank him enough for expressing how grateful GMA and GMC are to him, he has made such a huge impact on so many cities, communities, and individual lives, in Canada and abroad.

He was an inspiration; his passion will continue to make a difference in the world, he will keep on living through us, and we will keep on painting the world to spread joy and love in his honour.

He has shown to many; that we don’t always have to be strong or young, that we are all capable of anything when we set our mind to it. He inspired us to be the best version of ourselves, we all should strive to have the energy and passion that he exemplifies so much.

The sadness of having lost this loved one cannot overshadow the privilege of having known him. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the GMA community.

It truly was a privilege to have known him and to call him a friend!
