3. CHEMAINUS FESTIVAL OF MURALS SOCIETY
VOLUNTEER LIVING MURAL PROGRAM

ANNOUNCEMENT - May 24, 2010

Have you been searching for a volunteer activity to give back to your community? Have you simply not been able to find an opportunity that you actually found interesting enough with which to become involved? You are not alone, it’s a common problem. However, do not despair; there is now an ideal solution at hand!

How would you like to be out in the fresh air and sunshine this summer, cooled by sea breezes, meeting new people, learning how to speak to small international groups with ease and charisma? Improvisation workshops will assist you in letting go of your inhibitions and apprehensions (if you have any) and experiencing composure and gratification in communicating with others.

The Chemainus Festival of Murals is putting out a call for amicable volunteers with a flair for theatrics, who would like to help support our Living Mural Program this summer. We will provide you with the opportunity of becoming costumed spirits of historic local figures, heartily chatting with tourists from all over the world. We invite volunteers who enjoy, or would like to learn to enjoy, putting on a totally different persona and having some fun playing with it. Why not come and join some wacky Chemainiacs in "spiritedly" welcoming tourists to our fair island this summer? You might just find the experience invigorating!

Another very important aspect of the Living Mural Program is costuming. If you have access to period costumes, shoes, hats, accessories etc. we would love to speak to you. If you are handy with a sewing machine, we would worship the very ground you walk on.

Emily Carr steps forward at Chemainus

Intriguing to see where Chemainus is going after 25 years ...

Chemainus was not only the exemplar Heritage Murals Town for the globe but also reached critical mass saturation with murals first. Each new work creates a diminishing marginal impact so to speak once the quantum reaches say 10 or 12, unless ... well, unless there's a WOW factor.
Murals towns around the world have addressed this challenge to sustaining their artistic/ tourist momentum in various ways providing good models for the laggards. The latest notion Chemainus are presenting is the representation of the artworks of the famous Victorian [i.e. as from Victoria BC] artist, Emily Carr. Whilst Emily was not a formal member of the 'Canadian Group of Seven' painting on the east coast in the first quarter of the 20th century, they greatly admired her own distinctive work and she theirs.

Chemainus plans to create a portfolio of her works across its walls and Steffan Juenemann has been commissioned. His first work is nearing completion at year end 2008 as pictured below. It will be in the trompe l'oeil genre as the maquette depicted shows.

A Sneak Peak at our newest Trompe L'oeil Mural

Media release - Invitation.

To celebrate the 150 birthday of BC, the Chemainus Festival of Murals Society is as previously announced creating a new visionary “Emily Carr” mural program by unveiling a Million dollar outdoor art Gallery of Emily Carr and her art.

After 15 years, the Chemainus Festival of Murals Society, as well as the Municipality of North Cowichan and the Chemainus Theatre Festival, have approved a mural on the west wall of the Chemainus Theatre Festival.

The theatre building will have the honor of being the very first structure to receive a prestigious mural belonging to the new Emily Carr series. This historic occasion will also mark the arrival of the first trompe l'oeil mural in Chemainus, another milestone in this, our 25th year of coordinated mural management.

On October 15th, 2008 at 4.30 PM on the west side of the ‘Chemainus Theatre Festival, Building’ the first mural in the ‘Emily Carr series’ will be unveiled, this will also mark the first ever Trompe L’oeil mural to be introduced by international famous master artist Steffen Jünemann. Those stakeholders who have seen the rendering, call it stunning, most incredible, fascinating, and an amazing WOW.

Emily Carr 1871 – 1945 who spent most of here life in Victoria is the most famous women artist in all of North America and a beloved Canadian icon. Some of here work sold for over a million dollar.

The Festival of Murals society is looking forward to a rewarding, international publicity campaign in conjunction with the Emily Carr outdoor art gallery in Chemainus.
